Portuguese cuisine in the past seemed to pay small attention to creating a variety of prepared dishes for the excellent quality of their fruit. The general preference of the public was to enjoy their fruit at the end of a meal in its unadulterated state. This situation has now changed due to the introduction of a new and modern cuisine but unfortunately a little late in the day as the mass marketing trends have caused fast growing techniques together with a great amount of imported goods to be introduced into the market with the resultant loss in quality, natural vitamins and goodness.

If a visitor can visit a local market then they should be able to choose from locally grown produce. At the bottom of this page are a list of common fruits in the Portuguese language with their equivalent in English.
