The castle of Pamela to the south of Lisbon stands high above the surrounding plain providing a panoramic view. In its history the ownership of this castle passed through various hands as the Moors and Christian Kings fought for its strategic possession. In the 12th century it was finally conquered by King Sancho I and given to the Order of Santiago. Later, in 1423, King João I gave instructions for the castle to be altered into a monastery for this Order.
Visitors entering through the 14th century gate will quickly appreciate the importance that this castle held over the surrounding countryside. In the last century it was turned into an imposing luxury Pousada with its original refectory now the restaurant and separate bar and a swimming pool in the cloister. There are twenty three rooms and five suites.
