This Pousada of D. João IV is set in the former Convento das Chagas de Cristo in the important historical village of Vila Viçosa in the Alentejo. This town in its history has been the royal seat of the Kings of Portugal and the House of Bragança. A visitor to the Pousada will find the character of its original occupants strongly reflected in its architecture. The convent cells built for the nuns, the retreats and the oratories, have been preserved to recreate its original atmosphere and suggest the many past hidden legends. There are thirty four rooms and two suites plus a restaurant and bar. The Pousada makes an ideal location to explore the historic countryside and sample its culture and local traditional cuisine. For the convenience of guests there is a swimming pool and disabled guest facilities.
The Pousada is approximately 184 kms from Lisbon Airport.
